Systems Administrator III
Location: Boulder, CO
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Systems Administrator III is responsible for the configuration, operation and maintenance of all UNIX/Linux systems in the assigned working groups. This includes configuring and troubleshooting in RedHat Linux, Solaris and HP/UX as needed. The incumbent is also responsible to integrate Windows and UNIX systems using packages such as Samba and VMWare.
Level III Systems Administrators are expected to work nearly independently while at the same time keeping supervisors aware of all relevant circumstances and activities. Level III Systems Administrators must display excellent judgment and provide advanced application of tools and skills. They are also required to mentor junior Systems Administrators, document procedures, and in some cases, coordinate tasks for multiple Systems Administrators.
POSITION DUTIES:
The following duties are performed in UNIX/Linux.
- Operating system installation and upgrading
- Installation and configuration of peripheral devices
- Knowledgeable and able to apply UNIX security strategies
- Installation of third-party software
- Configuring automounters and license managers
- Inter-process communication
- File system concepts, including NFS, journaled file systems, striped and mirrored file systems, and analysis of I/O performance
- Performance analysis and System tuning
- Clustered Linux systems / Distributed computing
- Documenting system configuration (system software and hardware, wiring diagrams etc.)
- Train backup administrators.
- Automated monitoring / Diagnostics
In addition to these requirements, the incumbent is expected to fulfill the following duties:
Documentation/Reports:
- Draft the Task List Report and present the highlights at regular division meetings.
- Draft monthly report for SRG.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Experience:
- Applicant must have a minimum of 4 or more years of work experience as a Systems Administrator in a heterogeneous, multi-system UNIX environment.
- Systems Administration experience with the following operating systems is required: Solaris 2.X, HP-UX 10.X, and RedHat Linux.
- Applicant must have experience with heterogeneous computing environments connected to the Internet including working knowledge of DNS, NIS, NFS, TCP/IP, basic routing concepts, installation and maintenance of X Window-based applications and setup of X-terminals
- Applicant must be able to demonstrate previous experience supporting a user community in the areas of C programming, Perl programming, Shell scripting, resolving problems related to users' environments
- Knowledge and experience in any of the following areas is desirable:
- Mass storage systems
- Network File Systems (NFS) servers
- RAID
- SGE experience
- Windows NT/2000/XP
- Networked Attached Storage
- Storage Area Networks
- Relational Data Base Administration
- Networking
- Experience/skills in setting priorities and managing multiple tasks simultaneously
- Experience in supporting operational systems in the field.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
