Lead Computer Operator
Systems Research Group (SRG) is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Lead Computer Operator at NOAA's ESRL Global Systems Division in Boulder, CO.
About Global Systems Division
The mission of the Earth System Research Laboratory's Global Systems Division is to anticipate the science and technology that will be needed by the nation's operational atmospheric, oceanic and hydrologic forecasting services in the next five to ten years. After researching and developing new observing and forecasting systems, GSD transfers those technologies to operational users such as the National Weather Service, other government agencies (e.g. U.S. Air Force and the FAA), the commercial and general aviation communities, foreign weather forecasting services and private interests.
Our Role
The ITS group is responsible for implementing and maintaining the information systems used to collect, process and disseminate the weather-related data necessary to support GSD's mission. The Computer Operators play a key role in supporting the operational continuity of these systems.
Duties of all Computer Operators include:
- Monitoring the real-time operation of data-ingest and processing systems
- Performing first-level diagnosis and troubleshooting
- Communicating with internal and external technical staff in an effort to resolve service outages
- Keeping customers appraised of service outages and restoration efforts
- Maintaining logs of problems and their resolutions
Specific duties of the Lead Operator include:
- Providing direction to all group members
- Coordinating schedules and assigning project work
- Filling in as necessary during staff shortages (vacations, sick time, etc.)
- Improving and expanding services offered by the group
- Introducing tools and techniques that add to the group's ability to perform its duties
- Representing the group at meetings and in periodic reports to management
- Screening, hiring, training and evaluating Computer Operators
Additional group responsibilities and duties include:
- Operating the division's backup system, including performing file restores as requested
- Setting up video teleconferences for lab staff
- Maintaining a media library of technical books and software
- Keeping operations documentation up-to-date
Requirements for this position include:
- Leadership aptitude
- Strong analysis and problem-solving skills
- Familiarity with the Unix/Linux user environment and standard utilities
- Some programming knowledge (scripting experience will be especially useful)
- Good English language skills, both written and spoken
- Commitment to providing excellent customer service
- Flexibility and, above all, reliability
